To celebrate the life of Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown, one of the most celebrated and courageous aviators of all time, Wadworth, the regional pub operator and family brewer, has brewed a special IPA beer.

Named in tribute to the record-breaking British Navy Test Pilot, dubbed the “world’s greatest aviator”, the Winkle Brown beer is an IPA, 3.6% ABV, and was served at a commemorative event at Royal Naval Air Station in Yeovilton, Somerset. In addition to being served at the event, Winkle Brown beer will also be available for sale at Strangers’ Bar in the Houses of Parliament in September 2016.

Winkle Brown flew 487 different types of aircraft, more than anyone else in the world and was the first person to land a jet on an aircraft carrier.  He undertook 2,407 deck landings at sea and 2,721 take-offs; world records unlikely to ever be broken again.

After he passed away on 21st February 2016, the commemorative event was called for by the First Sea Lord of the Royal Navy, senior military and politicians, as well as Eric’s friends, family and colleagues. Flypasts and flying displays took place on the day which was attended by many eminent an influential names from aviation history.

Wadworth has a long-standing relationship with Navy Wings, the organisers of the event, with their Swordfish ale being the official beer of Navy Wings. For the last three years Wadworth has been donating £5 to the charity for every barrel of its Swordfish beer sold, and has recently presented a £6,000 cheque to Navy Wings.

Chris Welham, CEO at Wadworth said: “Our continued association with Navy Wings has allowed us to be involved in the commemorative event celebrating the life of the legendary, Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown. He shaped the way for naval activity throughout the Second World War.

“As a company we are very proud of our relationship with Navy Wings, and we hope to continue this long into the future.”
